Why doesn't the tuner pick up my instrument?

The tuner needs microphone access. When the page loads, your browser will ask for permission: click Allow. On macOS check System Settings → Privacy → Microphone for your browser, on iOS / Android check site permissions in the URL bar.

How accurate is the tuner?

Pitch detection is accurate to within ±1 cent on a quiet line-in source and ±3-5 cents over a phone microphone in a normal room. Background noise (fans, traffic) reduces accuracy. Get close to the mic and play single notes, not chords.

What instruments can I tune with this?

Anything that holds a steady pitched note: guitars (acoustic, electric, bass), violin, viola, cello, ukulele, mandolin, brass, woodwinds and the voice. To tune an instrument's strings, pick its tuning. For a voice, or anything without a preset, pick Chromatic: it shows the nearest note name and how many cents off it you are.

Does it support alternative tunings like DADGAD or Drop D?

Yes. Drop D, DADGAD, Open G and Half step down are among the twelve tunings in the Tuning list, and the frequency table below the tuner follows whichever one you pick. For a tuning that isn't in the list, pick Chromatic and tune each string to the note you want.

Does the tuner work offline?

It runs entirely in your browser using the Web Audio API: no audio is sent to a server. Once the page is loaded you can disconnect from the network and keep tuning.
