What makes B♯ Iwato different
Iwato uses five notes (1, ♭2, 4, ♭5, ♭7) and has neither a third nor a perfect fifth. Its two half steps, 1 to ♭2 and 4 to ♭5, sit next to two gaps of a major third, ♭2 to 4 and ♭5 to ♭7, which makes it sound sparse and unresolved. Every note belongs to Locrian on the same root; Iwato just leaves out the ♭3 and ♭6. With no fifth, the tonic never settles, which suits slow, meditative music. On B♯, B♯ Iwato is B♯ Locrian (B♯ C♯ D♯ E♯ F♯ G♯ A♯) without D♯ and G♯.
How to use the B♯ Iwato scale
Because B♯ Iwato has fewer or more than seven notes, it doesn't produce a standard set of seven diatonic triads. Instead, build chords by stacking thirds within the scale or use it as a melodic colour over chords drawn from a related diatonic key.
