Virtual piano: frequently asked questions
- How is this different from the basic piano?
- The basic piano is the instrument. The studio adds everything that reads what you play: chord names as you hold the keys, the scale lit under your hands, a live grand staff, a metronome, demo songs that fall onto the keyboard, and reading drills.
- Can I use my own MIDI keyboard?
- Yes. Any class-compliant USB MIDI keyboard works over the Web MIDI API, in browsers that support it. Nothing is installed and nothing is uploaded.
- Can I record and export what I play?
- Yes. Record arms with an optional count-in, the take is drawn as a piano roll with its pedal and velocities, and Export MIDI writes a standard .mid file with the tempo and time signature you played at, one any DAW will open. Nothing is uploaded; the file is written in your browser. A .mid you already have goes the other way: Import MIDI reads it (tempo, metre, velocities and pedal) and plays it onto the keys.
- Is the basic piano still free?
- Yes, and it always will be. It needs no account and is linked from the top of this page.
