- How do I name the chords?
- Press Listen. The first chord, the tonic, is already written in. For each chord after it, tap its numeral: I, IV, V or V7, and on the higher levels vi, ii and the inversions of V7 too. Undo takes back the last one and Check marks them. Under a wrong chord you'll see the one that played. A connection passes at 80% of its chords right.
- Where do the chord connections come from?
- We wrote them out by hand, voice by voice, in C major and A minor, and the trainer moves them to the question's key. They follow the rules of a harmony class: no parallel fifths or octaves, the leading tone rises to the tonic and the seventh of V7 falls a step. The four voices play from the same piano samples as the online piano.
- How is the bass line marked, and how often can I listen?
- Note by note, by name and not by octave: a C written an octave higher still counts. The first note is given. Levels 1 and 2 let you listen as often as you like, level 3 five times, level 4 four times and level 5 three times. Once it's marked, you can listen again as often as you want.
- How are the chords written?
- As Roman numerals: I, IV, V and V7, lower case for a minor chord (vi and ii, and i and iv in a minor key), and the inversions of V7 as V⁶₅, V⁴₃ and V⁴₂. A triad in an inversion keeps its plain numeral: I with its third in the bass is still I. The Polish page writes the same chords as functions, T, S and D, the way Polish music schools do.
