  1. I-IV-V cadences

    Each phrase starts on the tonic and ends in one of three ways. V to I is an authentic cadence, IV to I is a plagal one, and a phrase that stops on V is a half cadence. Listen to the last two chords.

  2. The deceptive cadence

    After V you expect I. A deceptive cadence goes to vi instead, or to VI in a minor key. The quiz mixes it with the three cadences from the last lesson.

  3. Secondary dominants

    A major II that pulls to V is V/V, and a major III that pulls to vi is V/vi. Some phrases have neither and stay in the key, so listen for a chord that steps outside it.
