Aural skills for beginners

Listening, clapping and singing for young beginners: higher or lower, happy or sad, a rhythm clapped back, a note and a short tune sung back.

  1. Up or down

Two notes, one after the other, sometimes just a step apart. Did the tune go up or down?

  2. Happy or sad

One chord at a time: major, the bright and happy one, or minor, the darker and sadder one.

  3. Clap the rhythm

Listen to one bar, then clap it back on the pad. The first clap is the first note; every note has to land on time, with no extra claps.

  4. Sing the note

A note plays. Sing it back into the microphone in any octave that's comfortable. It counts once your voice holds it in tune.

  5. Melody memory

C plays, then a short tune of three notes. Sing the tune back, note by note.
