B♭ Iwato at a glance
Iwato is a meditative Japanese scale used in shakuhachi music. Sounds sparse, calm and exotic to Western ears. Built on the root B♭, the scale takes on the specific colour and pitch range of that key - making it especially useful in genres and registers where B♭ is a comfortable tonal centre.

What makes B♭ Iwato different
Iwato uses five notes (1, ♭2, 4, ♭5, ♭7) and has neither a third nor a perfect fifth. Its two half steps, 1 to ♭2 and 4 to ♭5, sit next to two gaps of a major third, ♭2 to 4 and ♭5 to ♭7, which makes it sound sparse and unresolved. Every note belongs to Locrian on the same root; Iwato just leaves out the ♭3 and ♭6. With no fifth, the tonic never settles, which suits slow, meditative music. On B♭, B♭ Iwato is B♭ Locrian (B♭ C♭ D♭ E♭ F♭ G♭ A♭) without D♭ and G♭.
How to use the B♭ Iwato scale
Because B♭ Iwato has fewer or more than seven notes, it doesn't produce a standard set of seven diatonic triads. Instead, build chords by stacking thirds within the scale or use it as a melodic colour over chords drawn from a related diatonic key.
